Art in Brazil (1950 -2011)

In the late 1940s, there was a growing demand for a system to determine what was and what was not modern in Brazilian art. Modernism could not provide the answer ; it had become too local and no longer provided any conventions or aesthetic definitions.
In 1952, the Grupo Ruptura was established in São Paulo and with their rationally structured, geometrical abstract works, these artists distanced themselves from the regional, obligatory Brazilian iconography and social critique of the Modernists. The Grupo Ruptura called itself the first Brazilian avant-garde movement.
This exhibition traces the evolution of Brazilian art from the 1950s until the present day and is the first exhibition in Europe to address this from a Brazilian and not a predominantly Western perspective.
There are four chronological modules in the exhibition : the 1950s, the decade 1960-70, the 1980s, and the 1990s until today. These modules are interspersed with sections that explore the work
of specific artists in more detail, including Alfredo Volpi, and the Brazilian context – for example, the role of architecture in the period of the dictatorship (1964-1985) – in which the art developed.

The 1950s : (Neo-) Concretism

It was not long before the Neoconcretists distanced themselves from the overly rational and dogmatic Concretism and returned to freedom of experiment. The artists include, amongst others, Helio Oititica, Alfredo Volpi and Lygia Clark.

The 1960s-70s : Dictatorship

From 1964 to 1985, Brazil suffered under a dictatorship. Heavy and violent censorship was a distinguishing feature both in society and the arts, but at the same time it created an artistic movement that drew
energy from the continuous struggle for freedom of expression and experimented with sidestepping the barriers.

The 1980s : The return to painting ?

The 1980s are seen as the return to painting as a reaction to the end of the dictatorship. This module shows the importance of this discipline : not only did a new generation of painters emerge, but artists from previous generations also returned to painting. At the same time, other disciplines such as sculpture, drawing, video and performance grew in importance.

Festival des cultures et pratiques électroniques libres
Pour cette première édition, le festival ElectroPixel fait la part belle à la découverte. Entre musiques électroniques, arts numériques et autres curiosités culturelles : concerts, installations, performances et rencontres se feront écho le temps d’un week-end. ElectroPixel propose un regard sur la création artistique internationale des arts multimédia et numériques au travers ses multiples supports.

Le festival ouvre un portail numérique dans la ville permettant de croiser programmeurs, «bidouilleurs» (informatiques, circuits, machines…), inventeurs de tout bord (dorkbot et ateliers), des artistes (audio, visuel, musique, art plastique, interactif, performance…), théoriciens (philosophe, histoire de l’art, anthropologue, psychanalyse…) avec le public.

APO33 œuvre au développement et à la valorisation des arts numériques au travers de différentes actions, dont le festival ElectroPixel constitue l’un des temps forts de l’année. Cette première édition du festival interroge, agite, bouscule notre rapport à l’art expérimental, grâce à l’intervention d’artistes aux modes d’expressions inventifs et diversifiés.

Apo33 souhaite proposer une programmation pointue avec des artistes, des penseurs, des projets qui se situent à l’avant-garde des pratiques d’arts électroniques, numériques et intermédia qui serviront à terme à mieux faire connaître les pratiques émergentes, obscures, underground issues des nouveaux genres et codes contemporains nés de bifurcation insolite grâce aux technologies.

ElectroPixel est un festival de 3 jours, une occasion (pensée comme événement temporaire) de découvrir de nombreuses expériences interdisciplinaires qui sont rarement exposées aux yeux du public néophyte de la région de Nantes. Ce festival est aussi un moyen d’exposer les créations des artistes locaux de ce domaine et de les mettre en contact avec des artistes d’échelle Européenne et Internationale. Ce festival sera également l’occasion de confronter ceux qui pratiquent, pensent, proposent des formes inédites de création avec ceux qui mettent en avant des cadres de diffusion et de réflexions originaux et d’ouvrir cette voie artisitco-technologique au public.

Mobile Art. Experiencias móviles en Fundación Francisco Godia_LOOP Festival, Barcelona

La Fundación Francisco Godia presenta la exposición “Mobile Art. Experiencias móviles”, una aproximación al móvil dentro de la práctica artística contemporánea. La muestra se constituye como la primera en España y Europa que refleja no sólo la fotografía hecha con el móvil, sino un amplio panorama de creación artística. Comisariada por Lorea Iglesias, doctoranda en Comunicación Audiovisual que ha centrado su investigación en torno al Mobile Art, los trabajos que se presentan, en formato vídeo e instalación, pertenecen a diferentes artistas españoles e internacionales cuyo nexo común es la presencia del móvil como elemento determinante en sus propuestas, tanto en el plano conceptual como en el de la materialización. La exposición, que se podrá visitar del 12 de mayo al 20 de junio de 2011, se enmarca dentro del Festival LOOP y supone la participación entre la fundación y el festival internacional de videoarte por tercer año consecutivo.

En 2008 España superó la cifra de las 50 millones de líneas telefónicas con una población total de 47 millones de habitantes, lo que supone que en nuestro país hay actualmente más móviles que personas. La aparición de nuevos y mejores terminales móviles permite a los artistas apropiarse de esta herramienta y beneficiarse de diferentes aspectos como son la inmediatez, la portabilidad permanente, lo económico del dispositivo o las infinitas posibilidades técnicas que actualmente ofrecen algunos terminales como las cámaras de hasta 8 mega píxeles, la grabación en vídeo en HD o el GPS, entre otras.

Mobile Art. Experiencias móviles se ha ideado como una plataforma para dar visibilidad a este tipo de prácticas artísticas emergentes realizadas a través del móvil, pero también como una pregunta abierta que invite a interrogarse a cerca de la incidencia e integración de los dispositivos móviles en los procesos creativos más actuales. La muestra también quiere ser una prueba de la apropiación social y artística de esta tecnología de comunicación, cuyas nuevas características como la movilidad, la portabilidad o la convergencia están influyendo y provocando cambios en nuestra vida diaria.

Era cuestión de poco tiempo que el mundo del arte empezara a interesarse por el movimiento del Mobile Art y ya en 2008 tuvo lugar la primera exposición de fotografías tomadas con un móvil en Pamplona de la mano de Javier Castañeda, uno de los participantes de esta exposición. A partir de la popularización del iPhone en el 2009, se llevan a cabo diferentes exposiciones en más de 40 ciudades distintas a nivel mundial: Melbourne, Filadelfia, Milán, Madrid, Singapur, Berlín, y también en Cataluña, el Centre d’Art La Panera de Lleida presentó el trabajo de seis iPhoneógrafos.

Más allá de las exposiciones centradas en las fotografías tomadas con el móvil, o con el iPhone, la exposición parte del Mobile Art como un concepto amplio y en construcción que, más allá de una rígida alusión a un tipo concreto de formato artístico (el arte vinculado a la telefonía móvil), sirve de pretexto para reflexionar sobre la potencialidad creativa y experimental de esta herramienta, así como para profundizar en la amplitud de sus posibilidades comunicativas y de creación de nuevas identidades.

La exposición, centrada en la creación audiovisual, y en coherencia con la filosofía que anima el festival en el que se inserta, ha aplicado como criterio de selección el dar cabida a aquellas piezas en las que la tecnología móvil ha facilitado la apertura nuevas vías de experimentación creativa, fundamentalmente en el ámbito del video arte. La selección se complementa con la presencia puntual de obras en formato fotográfico así como con una abundante selección de material de consulta (selección bibliográfica, consulta on-line y vídeos que muestran otros proyectos de Mobile Art) con el objetivo final de poder reflejar la diversidad de las propuestas actuales.

La comisaria, Lorea Iglesias
Lorea Iglesias (Donostia, 1977) se licenció en Historia del Arte por la Universidad de Salamanca. Tras la licenciatura comienza su especialización en arte contemporáneo en la Universidad de Deusto, pero su interés por la exhibición del arte actual le llevará a cursar estudios de Museología para posteriormente centrar su formación en torno al arte electrónico, especializándose en Comisariado y Prácticas Culturales en Arte y Nuevos Medios en Barcelona. Es en este periodo cuando comienza su investigación sobre El Uso del Teléfono Móvil en las Prácticas Artísticas, investigación que lleva a cabo en el programa de Doctorado de Comunicación Audiovisual de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, convirtiéndose en doctoranda en Comunicación Audiovisual centrando su investigación en torno al Mobile Art. Actualmente trabaja como coordinadora del Movil Film Fest, en diferentes proyectos artísticos vinculados a la comunicación móvil y desde hace más de tres años forma parte del equipo de la Fundación Francisco Godia.

''ThroughtOut Breathing''

Es una escultura que respira junto con el espectador. La máquina acompaña, amplifica y expande el acto de respirar a través de un interface y del espacio.
El usuario respira en un micrófono customizado y la escultura comienza a respirara en conjunto con él, aumentando y distordsionando el sonido de la respiración.
El proyecto busca ampliar la acción de respirar a través de la utilización de elementos oníricos que todos juntos componen una especie de orquesta performático misteriosa. Creándose una relación rítmica entre el usuario y la máquina, donde el público pueda sentir la expansión de la respiración dentro de un espacio lleno de sonido, movimientos y percepciones de los sentidos.

Forma parte también de la exposición una serie de dibujos iluminados y pulmones que respiran, ambos enseñando el universo inconsciente de la escultura donde se crea una relación entre lo orgánico y lo sintético, y entre la máquina y el humano.

The exhibition offers a panorama of installations borrowed from the repertoire of science fiction: visual and sound installations, machines, 3D videos, robots, video games and more.

By combining scientific research and contemporary artistic creation, some works have developed a “paranoid” vision of the contemporary world that both reflects its evolution and the society envisioned by the “Cyber Punks”, of which William Gibson is the precursor.

This exhibition will present us with an imaginary, funny and frightening vision of a futuristic society perpetually questioning itself. Through new technologies, French, German, American, Belgian, Canadian, or even Dutch artists will invite you to enter into dialogue with machines, through works that will appeal to all the senses.

Live Ammo connects the relation between art and reality, when art goes into the sphere of life. Art practice in such circumstance can be a new way of life and a surviving strategy in social . In other words, the content, technique, effect and affection of art can change and, in turn, subjectivize art.

Here, the performativity of art happening in social milieu must be vilified through its effect of speech act. This is exactly what situationists’ assault to the society of the spectacle, a kind of reversal mimesis to actualize in real life. Therefore, live ammo cannot longer be measured by its falsity, blank ammunition, but its effect to the truth—an art practice to play for real. The truth and the real must be revealed through its profanity, just because when art in the real life situation can solidify different regime of representation, the trope of reality must be alternated. As result, this specific kind of art practice demolishes the separation of art and its related discipline.

Live Ammo deals with the sphere of art, the living and reality conglomerate. In the exhibition a shift in the order of reality is presented, and different perspectives and arrangements are consider to render a new sequence of text, sound and images. The exhibition functions almost as a know-how toolbox, and carries out the mission of the impossible, an onslaught from the power of fiction, which resides in art, to threat what we realize as reality and, thus, to arrive at the crossroad where the aesthetic and the social meets.

Expanded Eye is going to be exhibited at ARCO Madrid from February 16th-20th at Adora Calvo Gallery.
Preparations for ARCOmadrid´s 30th anniversary well underway.
The upcoming ARCOmadrid, International Contemporary Art Fair, to be held from February 16th through 20th 2011, looks set to be a memorable event not just for the fact that we are celebrating thirty years but also because of the many new changes we are introducing as well as the response of the galleries.
This year the art fair will be showcasing around a dozen Russian galleries, as part of its FOCUS RUSIA programme, selected by Daria Pyrkina, curator of National Centre for Contemporary Arts and a professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Also worth underscoring is the SOLO PROJECTS:Focus Latin America programme, put together with the assistance of Luisa Duarte, freelance curator from Brazil; Daniela Pérez, associate curator at Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, and Julieta González, associate curator of Latin American Art at Tate Modern, London, in the selection of galleries, artists and projects.
Furthermore, we also have the section OPENING: Young European galleries. It features a selection of galleries with less than 8 years of existence from all over Europe with a special focus on emerging countries.
ARCOmadrid will shortly begin its international promotion in conjunction with the City Council of Madrid. Sao Paulo, Paris, Miami and Lisbon are the stops chosen this year by the International Contemporary Art Fair to present the project for its thirtieth edition.

PHOTO TAIPEI is the very first annual art fair in Taiwan that is solely dedicated to photography-based and video art. Our mission is to create a dynamic platform in Asia for the art in this specific department. The success of our debut edition in 2009 was significant, with 5,000 visitors enjoying 33 art galleries and publishers from not only Asian countries, such as Australia, China, Japan, but also United States and France. PHOTO TAIPEI has therefore drawn worldwide attention and recognition as one of the major Asian art fairs focused on photography and video art.

According to the statistics, Taiwan boasts serious and avid art collectors. While the economic meltdown in 2008 caused a severe impact on the art market, Taiwanese collectors, on the contrary, has been keeping expanding their collections to include contemporary artworks from other Asian countries like China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, India and Turkey, just to name a few.

I am developing a project called Throughout Breathing with André Perrotta.

Throughout breathing is an interactive breathing machine that accompany, amplifies and expands the act of breathing. It is performing a new way of experiencing respiration, expanding it throughout a machine interface and the space.

The user will breath in a microphone that will activate all the sculpture activities at the same time (inflatable lungs and body moving air in and out + turn on fans for powder movement + sound augmentation of respiration + turn on ribs lights). The sculpture is going to breath together with the user and the user’s sound will be distorted and augmented.

The project seeks to amplify the action of breathing through the use of oniric elements that all together compose a kind of mysterious performatic orchestra.

Development process:

Luminescent ribs:
I have been investigating and testing many materials to create a white luminescent material for the rib.
The best solution found is using white led strips filled with silicone in a metal acrylic structure. I bought a 5 meter 300 led white strip and I am building a metal with acrylic structure for the ribs.

MOSTRA LABMIS 2010

Com obras voltadas às linguagens contemporâneas de caráter tecnológico, a Mostra LABMIS 2010 é uma coletiva dos resultados dos projetos selecionados por edital. Também integram a Mostra obras de artistas que participaram do Projeto de Residência Internacional, resultado da parceria entre o MIS e as instituições espanholas Can Xalant e Hangar.
Ao longo dos três meses de residência no LABMIS, os artistas selecionados tiveram livre acesso à infraestrutura tecnológica do espaço, contaram com o suporte de orientadores e técnicos especializados para o aprofundamento de suas pesquisas e participaram de encontros abertos ao público para apresentação de seus projetos.
O LABMIS, Laboratório de Novas Mídias do Museu da Imagem e do Som, é um espaço de reflexão, intercâmbio de conhecimento e experimentação em novas tecnologias. Atua na confluência entre arte, ciência e tecnologia, e oferece espaço para ações de difusão da cultura digital para artistas consagrados, emergentes, além de pesquisadores, estudantes e público não especializado.

Alienated Routine, Rotina Alienada
Rotina Alienada é uma escultura robótica suspensa e sensível, conectada a uma animação circular, cujas rotinas são ativadas pela presença do usuário. A escultura tem forma de seis dedos unificados, que representam a sociedade humana, ao passo que a animação sugere cidades do século 21. Os visitantes, cuja aproximação ativa as rotinas, representam o poder. A peça é uma metáfora do sistema social contemporâneo, utilizando símbolos semióticos que metaforizam seus movimentos alienados e processos.

Ambiente Sensível
A obra investiga relações entre som, espaço e receptor através da criação de um ecossistema audível, no qual esses três elementos são ativos e interconectados – um rizoma. O resultado sonoro é traço dessa interação, aberta e indeterminada. Essa característica remete à escala temporal presente, território da sensação e da experimentação, e reinsere o corpo na escuta, tornando-a ativa e criadora.

Movimento²
O projeto Movimento² apresenta vídeos onde o corpo se move em interação com as bordas do quadro, determinando o movimento da tela de exibição. Nos vídeos-objetos 1, 2 e 3, as telas são fixas e a relação com o espaço varia conforme as dimensões do corpo contido no espaço videográfico. Nos vídeo-objetos 4 e 5, a tela se desloca horizontal e verticalmente de maneira vinculada à imagem, criando uma conexão entre ação virtual e espaço real.

Vista On Vista off # 2
Vista On Vista Off # 2 apresenta vídeos da internet a partir do cruzamento de informações de uma bússola digital e de tags de imagens panorâmicas de locais para os quais o dispositivo aponta. Este, ao ser rotacionado em até 360o pelo visitante, busca novos conteúdos e apresenta vídeos em diferentes dimensões, conforme a relação entre a distância dos lugares vistos nas imagens e o lugar onde a obra está instalada, sugerindo uma ampliação do espaço físico.

O jardim virtual de Teófilo
Vídeo interativo sobre a vida de um desempregado que ocupa uma área pública nos arredores de Barcelona, onde instala seu pequeno universo feito a partir do lixo recolhido em um centro de reciclagem próximo da cidade. O público poderá entrar neste universo feito de sucatas e visitar a história de Teófilo de modo interativo.

EVA
O espetáculo multimídia EVA cria uma realidade híbrida que mescla a performance de Leila D ao mundo digital, que reage em tempo real ao movimento e ao som, empregando visão artificial e geração de gráficos através do computador. A obras faz experimentações com a fronteira entre o digital e o real, criando um palco expandido para construir relações de significado.

A exposição Tékhne discute a importância da convergência entre arte e tecnologia. A mostra homenageia o crítico de arte Walter Zanini e está dividida em dois núcleos – Histórico e Contemporâneo.

No Núcleo Histórico, a exposição possibilita revisitar cinco principais mostras de tecnologia realizadas pelo MAB-FAAP entre 1964 e 1986 que foram pioneiras na apresentação desse tema no Brasil. O Núcleo Contemporâneo traz o levantamento das obras que relacionam arte e tecnologia desde 1986, apresentando as grandes transformações tecnológicas, desde o advento da internet, criação de programas de edição de imagens e outros mecanismos que vêm influenciando a sociedade como um todo, inclusive a produção artística.

Sónar 2010

The Sonar 2010 Barcelona exhibition displays interesting artistic work produced using and based around the world of robotics.

Robotic dogs, chairs that put themselves up and machines for drawing self-portraits,... are some of the curious works that will be on display at SonarMàtica 2010 Barcelona.

Moving into the twenty-first century, the socialisation of digital tools and the spread of creative cooperativism has made new generations of artists once again turn their attention towards robotics. The proliferation of art workshops, university departments and specialised festivals are strong evidence of today's new phenomenon of the democratisation of robotics.

A chair that folds itself up and puts itself again, surveillance robots, robots that play the violin and guide users drawing a self-portrait, robotic pet... All this and much more are featured in this year's SonarMàtica, in which the festival is again collaborating with Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the production centre Hangar.

Alienated Routine is a suspended sensible behavioral robotic sculpture connected to a circular animation. The users presence activates the routines of the piece.
The sculpture has a shape of 6 unified fingers that is representing the humanity society, while the animation connected is the city where the sculpture lives that is representing a symptomatic city of the 21st century. The person who activates the routines is representing the power.
When the people approach to the installation, the sculpture and the animation starts to turn around in orbital movements generating alienated routines by a defence mechanism built for it. The spectator’s presences disestablish and disturb the sculpture.
The piece is a reflection and a metaphor on the system society of the 21th century; it searches to perform a new representation of it by using semiotic symbols that metaphors the alienation movements and process lived by an actual society.

The work is financed by MIS Museu da Imagem e do Som and developed in HANGAR medialab in Barcelona, Spain. It is an exchange program between Hangar and MIS.

來自巴西交換機構Sacatar基金會的科技藝術家安妮絲‧佛朗哥慣以動畫、錄像為材料，並以肢體為形創作互動式機械雕塑，運用心理學及夢境概念，賦予作品感知及想像力。安妮絲‧佛朗哥於歐洲各地及巴西進行創作，2008年她與馬德里的實驗室Interactivos MediaLab Prado合作創造互動裝置《擴張之眼》，並於2007、2008與位在巴塞隆納的Mecad- Esdi實驗室共同完成《連結的記憶》。2007年《控制夢的機器》於馬德里實驗室發展完成。
此次創作發表將呈現她於台北國際藝術村駐村期間所發展的三項計劃：《漂浮之地》，《偏執狂》以及《遙控》。《漂浮之地》主要內容為動畫，藉由高速旋轉的機械發光構成影像。此作品使用台灣在地的光壘科技股份有限公司所提供 I-ball (LED炫彩球)完成。《偏執狂》為一個嘴巴造型的機械互動雕塑，每當有人走近，這張嘴就會開口尖叫，然後微笑。此計畫與來自技嘉科技(Gigabyte Company)的電子科技工程師Akinori Kinoshita以及藝術家李孟原合作完成。《遙控》由七架遙控模型直升機在空中互動構成，投影於地形成特定影像。此項計畫與國立台灣大學資訊網路與多媒體研究所研究生周佩璇，電子科技工程師Akinori Kinoshita以及藝術家李孟原共同合作。

Brazilian artist Anaisa Franco from Sacatar Foundation exchange program has been creating suspended robotic sculptures that interconnect the physical with the digital in form of animations and intensities, searching for a chemical between materials, using concepts of psychology and dreams she provides an imagination and feelings for the sculptures. Anaisa works as artist in Brazil and Europe. In 2008 she developed the augmented interactive sculpture called "Expanded Eye" at MediaLab Prado, Madrid. In 2007-2008 she was awarded a scholarship from Mecad- Esdi in Barcelona to develop the project called "Connected Memories" on the Proyecto Expansion Digital. In 2007 her project "Controlled Dream Machine" was developed at Media Lab Madrid.
In the presentation she will present the projects developed in Taipei Artist Village. The projects are “Floating Land”, “Paranoia” and “Control”. “Floating land” is an animation made by drawings presented in a mechanical apparatus that draws with velocity and light. The drawings are suspended and floating in a circular ball. The technology is called I-Ball and it is a product developed by a Taiwanese company called Opti-Vision Co, Ltd. The project “Paranoia” is a reactive sculpture in form of a robotic mouth, when someone get close to it, it opens, screams and smiles. The project has been developed in collaboration with the Electronic Engineer Akinori Kinoshita from Gigabyte Company and the artist Meng Yuan Lee. The project “Control” is an aerial spectacle formed by seven-model aeronautics flying machines connected by elastic cables, which movements produce a shadow animation projected on the ground. The project has been developed in collaboration with Meng Yuan Lee, Akinori Kinoshita and Pei-Hsuan Chou, student of the National Taiwan University, Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia.

O Prêmio Sergio Motta apresenta a exposição Dream Machines, realizada pela artista Anaisa Franco, que em 2006 recebeu menção honrosa na 6ª edição do Prêmio Sergio Motta. Dream Machines é uma série de esculturas eletrônicas composta por corpos fragmentados suspensos que interconectam a matéria escultural com a digital em forma de animações, vídeos e intensidades lumínicas. O corpo é fragmentado para intensificar as sensações do membro e as imagens digitais são usadas para visualizar os pensamentos inconscientes das esculturas. Os trabalhos usam de conceitos da psicologia e dos sonhos para criar corpos pensantes, sensíveis e comportamentais através da interconexão do corpo como matéria escultural e do digital como materialização de pensamentos imagéticos. Dentro desta investigação a artista questiona a possibilidade de inserir comportamentos psicológicos dentro de máquinas esculturais expandidas, na tentativa de fazê-las expressar algum sentimento que se torna visível ao público através da sensibilidade aos olhos ou ao toque. Cria-se assim, uma imaginação própria que funciona como inconsciente maquínico sensível. As Dream Machines foram desenvolvidas entre 2007 a 2009 dentro de Instituições e Medialabs especializadas na criação de arte e tecnologia tais como LabMIS, Mecad, Medialab Prado e Universidade de Plymouth e foram financiados através de prêmios, editais e bolsas de estudo. Anaisa vive e trabalha em São Paulo. Atualmente, a artista desenvolve projetos na Residência do LabMIS no MIS Museu da Imagem e do Som em São Paulo e no Artist Village em Taipei, Taiwan, com bolsa adquirida pelo Instituto Sacatar, Brasil. Em 2007/8 ela foi premiada com a bolsa “Proyecto Expansion Digital” do MECAD, Barcelona para desenvolver “Connected Memories” onde também participou de aulas, artigos e conferências.

Escultura Segurança Inalcançável (Corpos Psicossomáticos)

Segurança Inalcançável é uma escultura sensível ao toque, translúcida e luminosa em forma de um braço eletrônico fixado na parede. O braço, ao ser tocado pelo observador, acende suas luzes internas vermelhas, intensificando-as.

A escolha do fragmento braço remete ao valor simbólico do mesmo em relação a segurança emocional determinada pela relação do toque entre dois membros como mãos remetendo a reciprocidade desta ação de união. As intensidades luminosas e a cor vermelha remetem a sensação amplificada do sentimento de segurança e reciprocidade emocional trocado entre duas pessoas, porém, o projeto busca questionar a sensação da confiança como um sentimento inalcançável pela situação simulada ali presente. Questionando a garantia na vida contemporânea onde as pessoas estão constantemente inseguras pelo sistema midiático, governamental e capitalista. Onde a segurança é inalcançável, existindo apenas dentro de uma simulação sistemática.

Segurança Inalcançável faz parte da construção de uma serie de esculturas eletrônicas chamadas Corpos Psicossomáticos, esculturas que investigam os comportamentos humanos através da construção de membros suspensos que expressam desejos inconscientes e sentimentos através do digital em uma busca de interconexão com a matéria.

Na construção desta série, utilizo conceitos da psicologia tais como memória, desordens mentais, transtornos afetivos, alienação, segurança, traumas, inconsciente, desejos, afetos e sensações. Tais estudos são materializados fisicamente formando seres esculturais pensantes, comportamentais e sensíveis que se posicionam através da interconexão da matéria com o digital.

Processo de produção do projeto

Primeiro foi desenvolvido um braço de resina oco.
Processo: Tiramos o molde do braço humano com oginato, depois preenchemos o formato com gesso, em seguida tiramos o molde do braço de gesso usando silicone e o preenchemos com resina transparente. O molde foi feito por Jucelino Pereira da Silva.

Durante o curso de Arduino ministrado por Radamés Ajna no Lab Mis, desenvolvemos as partes físicas eletrônicas e a programação do braço utilizando o microcontrolador Arduino Diecimilia.

Os sensores utilizados para dar interatividade a obra foram os Infravermelhos (emissor + receptor), foram inseridos 6 sensores ao longo do braço, os quais ativam as luzes pelo toque. Antes de decidir pelo melhor sensor, testamos diversos sensores como os de luz, de calor, de temperatura, etc.

Residência no LABMIS

Os quatro contemplados para o Programa de Residências Artísticas LABMIS são Anaisa Franco, Claudio Bueno, a dupla Felipe Sztutman e Rodrigo Bellotto, e Guilherme Lunhani, todos de São Paulo, entre inscritos de todo o Brasil. Eles terão acesso livre à infra-estrutura tecnológica do LABMIS com o suporte da equipe de orientadores e técnicos especializados e serão contemplados com: um texto crítico sobre suas obras a ser escrito por um profissional designado pelo MIS após a conclusão dos trabalhos, a realização de uma mesa redonda e a exibição do trabalho na mostra coletiva de resultados (que trará ainda uma publicação específica).

A Comissão de Pré-Seleção do Programa de Residência LABMIS 2009 contou com a participação da jornalista Juliana Monachesi, e dos artistas Ruggero Ruschioni e Gisela Domschke que, reunidos no período de 3 a 6 de novembro de 2008, analisaram os cerca de 80 projetos inscritos e pré-selecionaram 26 deles. Já a Comissão de Seleção do Programa, formada pela crítica Angélica de Moraes, pelos artistas Rejane Cantoni e Wilson Sukorski, e pela pesquisadora Priscila Arantes analisou os projetos pré-selecionados, levando em consideração os critérios descritos no edital, além de aspectos específicos dos projetos inscritos de modo a privilegiar as propostas que melhor respondem aos diálogos artísticos estimulados pela ação do LABMIS.

The 5th Seoul International Media Art Biennale, also known as the Media City Seoul 2008, will be held at the Seoul Museum of Art from September 12 through November 5. With the first exhibition held in 2000 and the fifth this year, the Seoul International Media Art Biennale has continually served as a stage for the historical evolution of new media art – as opposed to most other exhibitions devoted to this genre being no more than single-bout events – and positioned itself as one of the leading festivities garnering major attention both within and outside the country.

The fifth Biennale, in particular, is of the significance that it serves as a retrospective review of past exhibitions and a preparation for the coming decade. FILE 2008 Electronic Language International Festival happens this year at the Fiesp Cultural Center, on August 05 to 31 (August 4th - Official opening for guests), Tuesday to Saturday 10 am-8 pm, Monday 11 am-8 pm, and Sunday 10 am-7 pm. The program occupies the Cultural Center's Art Gallery, Theater and Mezzanine, which host the exhibition, performances and lectures. FILE, the major art and technology festival in Brazil and Latin America, as well as one of the most renowned events in the world in this area, for nine years has inserted the country in the global context of art and technology, or media art, performing a compilation of the artistic productions in the fields of electronic and digital arts, and working as an indicator of those productions' plurality. Given the diversity of digital culture, FILE is an event that nests several festivals, which occur simultaneously. Moreover, FILE offers an international symposium, an archive with more than 2,000 works and a laboratory for the production and development of new works, FILE Labo. FILE is an annual event that in 2008 has happened, with other versions, in Porto Alegre, at Santander Cultural, and in Rio de Janeiro, at Oi Futuro. Expanded Eye is an interactive light sculpture composed by a big transparent eye sculpture suspended from the ceiling; the big eye looks to the user, but it's in fact user's eye which is projected inside the sculpture. The sculpture recognizes the user’s eye blinking and generates an interactive animation based on it. Each blink of the user multiplies the number of eyes in the projection in a fragmented, hexagonal and dislocated way. The core of the piece is to expand the view of human beings, transforming the view into a multiple and hexagonal expansion as the ultra complex insect’s compounds eyes structure.

Expanded Eye project was developed during Interactivos? 2008 at Medialab Prado in Madrid, Spain.

Connected Memories (2007), is a machine that symbolically function processing and bringing to the conscious level stored remembering. The work structure is made by a database in expansion that stores memories in form of narrations and audiovisual. The installation is formed by two transparent light sensible head sculptures that dialogue between each other, exchanging memories, feelings and remembering. Each head has a Bluetooth and the people can interfere in the dialogue by sending text messages and videos using their mobile devices. The system immediately reproduces the files through a synthetic voice and TV, which are stored, been part of the head’s collective unconscious memory database. The heads also emit feelings that are expressed through light intensities that feel the user presence in the space.

Connected Memories (2007), es una “máquina” que funciona simbólicamente procesando y trayendo al plano consciente recuerdos almacenados. La obra, se estructura a partir de una base de datos en expansión que almacena recuerdos en forma de narraciones y audiovisuales. La instalación está conformada por dos esculturas (cabezas) luminosas que dialogan entre ellas, intercambiando memorias, sentimientos y recuerdos. Cada cabeza contiene un bluetooth, y los usuarios pueden interferir en lo diálogo enviando mensajes de texto, photos e videos usando su mobile. El sistema reproducirá inmediatamente el mensaje a través de una voz sintética, y el mismo pasará a formar parte de la base de datos de recuerdos, lo mismo con los videos y imagenes. Las cabezas también emiten sentimientos que se expressam atraves de la intensidad lumínica que emiten, sentindo la presencia de los usuarios en lo espacio.

The infrared sensor on the ears feels the presence of the people and light up or down the red leds inside the heads by measiring the distance. when people get close it is brighter.

Connected Memories was programmed with Max Msp/ Jitter. It uses 2 computers in a network. Jordi Puig programmed the system.
The software made consist in playing a video of 10 minutes and it receives txt messages and videos from mobile devices via bluetooth and play it in the heads.

The light sculpture is sensible. It is measuring the distance of the audience by an ultra sound sensor PING, sold on Parallax.com. The sensor is going to be annexed in the head. The sensor activates the intensity of 5 Red Leds inserted in the middle of the head. The sensor responds to the distance of people by sensing waves of sound. I am using an Arduino board to program the sensor and the Leds. The circuit uses 220 Ohm resistors.

Each head uses one computer with Bluetooth.

The artist Juliana Mundim (www.pocketfilmfortravelers.com) is collaborating with the preparation of the dialogues as if it were a script.

We did a special box made of wood to prepare the resin model which was filled with a special plaster to make figures, we had to made two plaster models using the same box. The glass model is symmetric but we couldn't use only one model because it’s an opposite symmetry. Marino and Tito helped preparing the model.

How to do a resin model:
First you choose a model or prepare one in ceramic or any hard material.
In this case I used a ready glass head that I bought in a mannequin shop.
Then, you build a wood box able to fit half of the head. Make sure this box is completely without any holes (better filling the holes with modeling clay
Prepare the plaster and fill the box until the half of the head is filled. Let it dry for one or two days. Now that is dried, take the glass head out of it, dismantle the wood box and now you have to do the same thing with the other face of the head.
Remember that the heads are symmetric, but are an opposite symmetry that doesn't allow you to use the same plaster model.
Now you have two plaster models that you have to fix the holes and let it very flat and smooth using water modeling clay and polishing until it gets perfect.
Now the plaster models are done to do the resin model.

Connected Memories installation-starting

This is the project Connected Memories developed in Mecad/Esdi Barcelona.
The project are two heads exchanging memories and experiences. The memories can be seeing in a small TV under each head and the dialogues are expressed through speakers positioned in the mouth.
The audience can interfere in the head's dialogue by sending a bluetooth message to each head and also they can send a video to the head.
Also, the head emits red lights sensing the presence of the audience.

First I bought a glass sculpture, but I found a problem. the glass can not be modified, neither holed. So, I had to do a model with plaster to do a head model of resin.

The project CONNECTED MEMORIES was selected to be developed at MECAD, Barcelona on the Proyecto Expansion Digital from october 2007 until january 2008.

The Media Centre d’Art i Disseny (Mecad) of the Escuela Superior de Diseño ESDi launched the Proyecto Expansión Digital in 2007 with the intention of promoting investigation into and creation of new media art.

The Proyecto Expansión Digital aims to promote electronic art and encourage the diffusion of young artists and researchers through its grant programme and cycle of exhibitions, among other activities.

The first exhibition in the cycle, EXPLORACIÓN_ELECTRÓNICA, will be launched as part of the annual Break and Creativity event. This display will be made up of multimedia works by emerging artists and ex-students from the Electronic Art and Digital Design degree and the International Masters in Interactive Systems, as well as ESDi tutors.

The EXPLORACIÓN_ELECTRÓNICA will also include a presentation of the online database Net_Españawhich was created in 2006 in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo. Net_España offers an extensive catalogue of Spanish electronic artists, or resident in Spain, and their work, as well as information about different disciplines within electronic art, in addition to bibliographies and a directory. The second Proyecto Expansión Digital exhibition will take place in May to correspond with the fifth year of the M_A_E (Muestra de Arte Electrónico). A eletricidade inspira o projeto Dorkbot, que tem edição baiana hoje, no Goethe-Institut

O conceito é, no mínimo, inusitado: "Pessoas fazendo coisas estranhas com eletricidade". Partindo desse ponto, o Dorkbot, edição de Salvador, toma conta hoje, às 18h30, do Pátio do Goethe-Institut (Corredor da Vitória), dentro da programação da Feira Hype. O evento acontece mensalmente em diversas cidades do mundo e pretende criar um espaço para apresentação e discussão de projetos criativos que envolvam a eletricidade. O clima é informal, prometem os organizadores, longe da sisudez de palestras e seminários. A programação conta com o projeto Controlled dream machine, de Anaisa Franco; Perecível, de Larissa Ferreira; Foto-scan, de Fabiola Freire; e Vídeo gridcosm 0000-1000, de Lenara Verle. A entrada é franca.

Mais do que utilizar a tecnologia como ferramenta, iniciativas como a do Dorkbot pretendem apresentar a tecnologia como expressão artística. Seja na dança, cinema ou artes plásticas, os artifícios oferecidos pelo mundo digital abrem portas para um grande leque de possibilidades. Prova disso, por exemplo, é a manifestação em dança-tecnologia de Larissa Ferreira, chamada Perecível. Nela, a artista apresenta o corpo como objeto de reflexão artística, numa época em que tudo é mercadoria e espetacularização. Ícone do consumo, o corpo humano é salpicado com imagens da mídia atual.

Já Lenara Verle mostra um trabalho de arte colaborativa, ou seja, que conta com a participação de diversos profissionais. O Vídeo gridcosm 0000-1000, vencedor do prêmio Ars Eletronica 1996, é um vídeo-mosaico que condensa cinco anos de trabalho de mais de cem artistas. Eles enviaram suas intervenções para o projeto, dando forma a uma animação de 15 minutos. Já Foto-scan, de Fabíola Freire, pretende sair do lugar-comum da fotografia, utilizando mídias e tecnologias alternativas. Para isso, a artista criou imagens no scanner, que se aproximam do tridimensionalismo.

Ainda dentro da programação, o Projeto controlled dream machine, de Anaisa Franco, é uma instalação que "usa códigos coletados de chips neuronais para controlar os sonhos e os comportamentos de uma perna robô". Animações projetadas neste objeto tecnológico expressam os tais sonhos, como se fossem símbolos do inconsciente. Para aqueles que têm idéias que casam com a proposta do Dorkbot, os organizadores incentivam a participação. Para isso, basta enviar um e-mail para dorkbotsalvador@gmail.com, com uma proposta de um ou dois parágrafos, trazendo a idéia do projeto, que deve durar entre 20 e 30 minutos.

The neurally-controlled dreaming machine

Controlled Dream machine is an installation that uses Distributed patterns of neural activity to control the behavior of a robot legs body in his dreaming process (animations). It can be called as a neuron memory processing engine consisting in simulating and analyzing the dreaming process in a conscious and unconscious atmosphere. The controller of the system is a data collected of cultured embryonic rat neurons cells that grow on a surface containing a grid of electrodes (multi-electrode arrays, or MEAs) [1] capable of both recording and stimulating neural activity, they are living in a neuro-engineering lab, in Georgia institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA (Dr. Steve Potter's lab). The data collected from these neurons is used as the brain of the system; it controls the behavior of the robot leg and at the same time is guiding its dreaming process in symptomatic relation of feedbacks.

“Dissociated neurons begin forming connections within a few hours in culture, and within a few days establish an elaborate and spontaneously active living neural network. After one month in culture, development of these networks becomes relatively stable (Gross et al., 1993; Kamioka et al., 1996; Watanabe et al., 1996) and is characterized by spontaneous bursts of activity. The neural activity on the MEA was recorded by amplifiers and A/D converters producing a real-time data stream of 2.95 MB per second (60 channels sampled at 25 KHZ). The Controlled Dream Machine is using the recorded data of this activity to be the brain of the robot in its dreaming process.”[2]

The project integrates brain, body and unconscious environment in one system. The use of the neurally-controlled data in the project metaphors the formation of the unconscious and the memory, since this data is the tracing memory of the communication between thousand of neuron cells living in a cultured electronic circuit in a lab. Afterwards, the primary development reason for the experiment is for studying learning and memory in vitro, so, these very primitive embryonic neurons cells learning and growing in collective are working together and producing this huge amount of data that metaphors the collective unconscious of humanity and all the knowledge created for group minds in a growing process.

The neurons works in a neural network catching all the time references from sensations, memories and histories of the past. Through those connections they are conceptualizing new formats for the future as the human brain learning process. The future is all hooked in the past; the existence of future generations evolutes from past happenings creating a chain of moments; in a connection between past and future, concretizing the presence consciousness in the body and the unconscious in the mind. This movement is creating an enormous database that is similar the entire database a person can collect in the formation and development of the unconscious mind of the individual and the collective unconscious of humanity.

The behavior, sensation of these memories (neuron’s data) calls the symptoms of the body and at the same time reach the unconscious through dreams. The memory has the ability to retain and recall past states of consciousness. Memories bring symptoms to the body by recalling forgotten and repressed traumas. It is functioning similar as Freud model of heal: “trauma / repression / forgetting / symptom / remembering / healing.” [3].

The body (robot leg) is the consciousness of the system, the awake state, the conscience, the lucid memory, the REM (rapid eye movement) states. The body is the generator of the symptoms that comes from the memories and the mind desires, it is in a process of receiving the stimulus that come from the living neurons data behaving the same as the nerves impulses on the human nervous system. The project is not only analyzing the trajectory between formation of body neurotic symptoms and dreams constructions, but also reflecting what kind of symptoms relates and calls what kind of dream and how these symptoms responds to dreams and vice versa in a feedback process, also reflecting about the formation of the unconscious and memory in machines. “Freud says that the Conflict between conscious and unconscious impulses are said to give rise to anxiety, then to defense mechanisms, which counteract this anxiety. To tap the unconscious, Freud used a variety of techniques, including hypnosis, free association, and dream interpretation. Conscious cognitive processes, such as thinking, are performed by the ego and part of the superego. Freud used the idea of the unconscious in order to explain certain kinds of neurotic behaviors.” [4]

The feedbacks [5] between body (robot) and dreams are related as:

NIGHTMARES: When the robot legs goes to nightmares it starts shaking its legs continuously. The anxiety gives maximum rise, the finger lights starts blinking as the eyes shakes when in REM (rapid eyes movements) sleep states. [6] It is the freedom of the repressions and the fears in a concentrated way.
TRAUMAS: Usually traumas lead to nightmares; the road between them is very close. When the robot is walking and finds in traumatic areas it shakes, the scar lights strongly blinks. It is full of guilt, embarrassment, fear and shame.

SENSATIONS: the sensation area generates all other spaces through feelings; this is the starting point, the robot starts its dream’s journey by walking through unconscious from here.
“Sensation can be defined as our mental representation of our physiological signaling systems, and feeling as our mental cognizance, or processing, of the experience.” [7]
The sensation area gives rise to the robot leg’s mechanisms of defense.
Examples: Acceptance, Annoyance, Anger, Appreciation, Compassion, Confidence, Contentment, Creativity, Curiosity, Depression, Excitement, Fear, Frustration, Gratitude, Guilt, Happiness, Helplessness, Interest, Jealousy, Joy, Love, OK-ness, Pleasure, Resentment, Sadness, Shame.

MEMORIES: when in the memories, the robot leg walks and stop, the stop means remembering period. Also, white lights turns on.

COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS: This space unifies all the feelings, memories, of the entire human society of the world; it contains concepts as science, morality and religion. When the robot legs gets here it walks, stops and shakes.

CONTROLLED DREAM MACHINE was selected to participate at Interactivos? that is a hybrid between a workshop, an exhibition, and a seminar. Through a call targeted at artists, engineers, musicians, programmers, designers, architects, and hackers, Medialab Madrid attempts to present a set of projects for their collective development, with the aid of three lecturers, within a set of inter-disciplinary work groups.
One of the chief objectives of Interactivos? is to transcend the traditional workshop model as defined by a one-directional dynamic, in which a small group of experts teach and a small group of students learn. In this model, the group of experts who share their knowledge also includes the participants, and, above all, the whole process is open to a more general public (who are also offered the chance to become participants). In order to make this possible, a team of cultural mediators will introduce the members of the general public visiting the space to the general concepts behind the project, and get them in touch with the developers.
The name, Interactivos?, contains a question mark, which is a reference to a questioning of the idea of interactivity understood as a "choice among a limited amount of given options". The term "interactivity" is much better expressed though collective creation with open hardware and open software tools, in an environment in which participants can learn as well as teach how technology works, and where they can also have the opportunity to build their own artifacts with the help of everyone else.

Critique of Hack-able Curator

Nowadays the institutions and the art objects have expanded their configurations to new areas to be explored. In 90’s with the digital revolution, the process of creating art relies on collaborations between artists and a team of scientists, designers and engineers; consequently, digital art collapses boundaries between those disciplines. Since late 90’s digital art officially entry into the art world, when institutions began to incorporate the field in their show and exhibitions, although, digital art shows was mostly take place at Media Centers, that was created to host and develop this contemporary field, such as ZKM, Ars Electronica, ICC. Hack-able Curator was developed in collaboration in a team of seven people whose primarily professions are artists, designers, programmer, law and marketing.

In the beginning of the century art was easy categorized as painter (bidimensional) and sculpture (tridimensional), nowadays it is difficult to categorize because the works interconnects various elements, for example Hack-able Curator is an interactive physical installation using robotics, internet component, mobile phones. The writer Christiane Paul, mention in her book Digital Art [1] “It is problematic to claim that all digital works can be neatly categorized according to different forms: most of the time this works combine various elements and defy a purely formal classification.” “Among the forms that a digital art work can take are installation; film, video and animation; Internet art and software art; virtual reality and musical environments.” Page 70. The artworks have been created according to the availability of tools and technologies of their time. The artists have always been the first to reflect on culture. As a result of this, they are frequently creating new steps and new categories for the art world. This movement will never stop.

The history of digital art has been shaped more by the history of science and technology then art historical influences. The use of technology was mostly inspired by military, industrial, research centers and consumer culture. In the 60’s the industrial age made its transition into the electronic era and the artists became very interested in the intersection between art and technology. With photography and video become possible instant copying and series reproduction, as a result, the concepts of authenticity, authority and aura was modified, consequently causing debates, it definitely undergone profound changes in the art world and art market. As Walter Benjamin suggested in his 1936 essay ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ [2], which has become one of the key texts in the discussion of the social and artistic significance of the technical visual media.

Through out the 70’s and 80’s artists increasingly began experimenting with computer, video, performances and installations. The feminists were complaining for acceptance and recognition into the art world galleries, institutions and universities. Guerrilla girls did a poster “Do women have to be naked to get into museums? Less than 5% of the artists in the modern art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female.”[3]. In the 80’s and 90's with the improvement of computers, the automation technology, the biotechnology, and the Internet, the artists continuously are expanding to those new areas, generating new concepts and categories as bio art, satellite art, and so on.

In the beginning of the century, the functions of the institutions were to collect and preserve the art objects, but with all new necessities those functions expanded, consequently, are occurring interesting online deliveries of museum content hosting a variety of online art into specifics websites that function as hosts such as Rhizome [4], Crumb[5], Kurator[6], Digital craft[7], Metamute[8], ReadMe RunMe[9], Generator [10], Whitney Artport [11], Low-Fi [11] and so on.

Nowadays is very difficult to be connected and networked with all the news delivered in the world. The world has transformed in a huge complex environment with thousand miles of knowledge, information and happenings, moreover, with the Internet seems that you have everything available in your hands, unlike it is not true and people can get paranoid and confused living in this exaggerated and chaotic environment. Reflecting into all these facts mentioned above we created the Hack-able Curator, a collaborative work that might help the role of curating once the human curator becomes frustrated by too much information and not enough time to do the work. Nonetheless, this work does not intended to replace human curators and it works as both de-construction and reflection about the emerging tools for curating in a collaborative context and about the practice of hacking both devices and software as creativity. Hack-Able Curator is a robotic arm that makes curatorial decisions by using an algorithm it chooses images from the popular photo-sharing website Flickr, but someone can hack the system influencing in the curators decision. It is 'hack-able' because everyone can add images to the main resource by uploading them to Flickr or by voting for any images displayed on the website by sending a SMS message to the system. In both ways, the general public can influence the decision the robot curator makes.

The Hack-Able Curator is a playful interpretation of the curatorial system with an alternative understanding of the traditional role of curator. As a consequence of changes in technology, the role of a person involved in a cultural institution who cares for its collections has changed. It is possible to collect and categorize data in new ways that undermine traditional practices and suggest more democratic solutions. For example the Flickr website. The Hack-Able Curator is intended to trigger off discussion about the new challenges and new possibilities for curators. The project asks whether the availability and popularity of social technologies suggests that the curator is redundant or indeed that everyone now can be a curator of their own images? By providing a mechanism for 'hacking' this curator's choice making process, we are seeking to ask questions about the democratization of the otherwise subjective role of the curator.

Hack-Able Curator is a project produced in collaboration by the students on the master’s programme in digital art and technology I-DAT, university of Plymouth that are Anita Barwacz, Lindsey Bedford, Andy Bennett, Anaisa Franco, Martha Patricia Niño, Richard Wilkes. The students all come from different areas such as visual arts, interactive design, marketing and law, consequently the tasks was divided individually with occasional group meetings to discuss the development of the project. The tasks was divided as:
Anaisa: Robotic parts and mechanims; Anita: Developing the initial search criteria, press release, and developing blog; Andy: Designing the web interface and flickr search; Lindsey: Designing the web interface and flickr search; Martha: Developing the Internet connection with the physical device and robotic parts and mechanisms; Richard: physical parts and help at Developing the rules for the curatorial texts and research about curating. The tasks were successfully done and the project was all developed in 3 months.
The first exhibition was from 19th of January until 18th of March 2007 at Plymouth Art Centre as part of SLOW Exhibition, Plymouth, UK.

I was with three girls; we were swimming in a swimmpool. Two of them built a balloon, but the balloon was different, its base was a smashed girl and the other girl was sitting under this seat. On the swimmingpool was happening a war with female guns; there was a girl with long hair, she was wearing a star-shooting corselet and she starts shooting on me. It was hurting.
The balloon was flying in the sky; it started to go very far. Suddenly, we saw the balloon falling down. Everybody ran to he place to see if the girls was allright, but they weren’t, the girl was fainted and we didn’t know if she was death or alive, we were shaking her a lot, trying to awake her up.

The motorcycle photo machine

I was sleeping naked in a hostel room and I needed to awake up to take shower, it was really hot. There were two beds in the room; the bed above me was my friend and her mother; they were lying down and looking to me in a cute and sweet way. Suddenly, I was running away very fast in an enormous, green and beautifull park. I was with my photography machine and I was seating above it and running at the same time. It was strange, but worked. Then, I perceived that if I push the photo button the machine started been a motorcycle and if I pressed the button many times it accelerates more and more. Now, I was very fast with my motorcycle photo machine.

Hotel adventures ending in a murder

I was in a hotel similar to a hotel I stayed in NY when I was 14 years old. The hotel lobby was round and in the middle there were lots of elevators inside a cilindric transparent cone. All the elevators were different, each one had a different shape, function, and appearance; all of them were going up and down. The function of one elevator was to equilibrate; the other was a double bed that was moving continuously and the others were completely made of glass. I was going up and down with these elevators. Suddenly, the elevator’s door opened and appeared an ocean inside the hotel; it was all immersed into water. Then, my uncles appered in a boat; the hotel was like a turbulent sea, a storm. I was frightened and decided to go home, but I thought better and decided not going home because was boring at home and I was looking for adventures, so, I jumped to their boat and we went for a ride in a fishing boat. Inside the boat were my cousin and my brother, who was driving. We went down the street with the boat as if it was a car until we got in a lake. My brother starts fishing, he fished an orange fish, but it escaped and then, the hook thread on my finger, it hurted and bled a lot, I was mad with him! After a while, my brother fished a grey-purple enormous fish! It was a hippopotamus. I was grief for the hippopotamus and was screaming and asking him to let it go, but he didn’t. The hippopotamus was looking a poor baby and suffering. Suddenly, the entire situation changed; the hippopotamus stole my brother’s fish instrument and run away. My brother ran in his direction, took a gum from his pocket and killed the hippopotamus shooting all around his body. The hippopotamus died and it was layed down on the ground rounded through lots of blood.

The Hack-Able Curator project

We would like to inform you that from 19th of January until 18th of March 2007, the 'Hack-Able Curator' will be exhibited at Plymouth Arts Centre as part of SLOW.

The 'Hack-Able Curator' includes a robotic arm that makes curatorial decisions. By using an algorithm it chooses images from the popular photo-sharing website Flickr.

It is 'hack-able' because everyone can add images to the main resource by uploading them to Flickr or by voting for any images displayed on the website by sending a SMS message to the system (07766404142, and putting curator 'good' or 'bad', depending on preference). In both ways, the general public can influence the decision the robot curator makes.

The 'Hack-Able Curator is a part of Slow festival. The idea of 'slowness' is interpreted as a critical method and metaphor for contemporary art and curatorial practice. As a alternative to fast life, it suggests slowing things down to make critical reflection more possible in contrast to the uncritical speed of change represented by urban regeneration and wanton consumer capitalism.

We were in Turkey. We had a friend with us, he was a brown man and we were in a place similar to a University of third world. At the University’s entrance there was an amount of policemen; the place was trash. Our friend did not want to go with us; he decided to lie and to rest at the ground in the middle of the yard. We went outside and we took a little and old train; this train took us to the other side of the place, the train was driving in a very narrow road and everything was light brown, like earth, arid and dry. Suddenly we arrived somewhere. We got out of the train and we saw a place like a terrace with a beautiful blue ocean view. There was a big wood table and lots of women drinking tea and talking at that deck. The women were very nice with us, offered us tea to drink, we accepted and talked a little bit. After some time, we went back to the train and I was grateful for everything; it was a beautiful and magic moment.
We took the train back and we seated at the back of the coach. There were some chairs in front of us with lots of people and children. We arrived at the university again, the policeman did not allow us to entry, but I showed him my card that was in my pulse tied with a plastic and we entry back. We were trying to find our friend, but we were lost, so, we took a different train to somewhere else. We were trying to find our friend.
This train took us to a very crazy beach, with lots of women lying down in the sand. In the sand there was some squad holes dig on the ground, it had a body shape and they were big and medium deep. Above the holes there were lots of women lied on queue, some of them were really fat, obese. The beach was functioning this way: the waves strongly come and take the women into the ocean and bring them back in a movement sliding up and down on the sand. It was like a ballet. The women come and go. The waves were so strong and little brown and if the waves touch your feet, it captures you, and you get on trouble, because it takes you deep into the ocean and them bring you back. It was scary but the womens seems to enjoy it as if it was like a massage or a ritual. The ocean was getting stronger each second. So I run way with her, the waves were almost in the street.

The snake

My brother and me were in a port, a kind of park. Before we went out with some friends and now we were observing that ocean in a pier, we saw something happening in the ocean. The ocean was divided by parts, and each part was completely filled with different animals such as snakes, fishes and seals. One snake escaped out of the ocean and come in my brother’s direction; the snake beat and poisoned his heel! Suddenly, for few seconds he transformed into my dog Daria and I took him in my arms, I was holding his pain. He was sad.
Suddenly, I found a book on the ground; the book was a snake cure manual. We were reading it and an old guy aproche to us and said that he knew everything about snakes; he helped me.

The enormous Tree

I was walking in a forest with lots of beautiful green trees. Suddenly, I saw an enormous and large tree, it had a height of a ten floors building. I was really impressed and observing around, then I saw a stair in the tree, I thought I should entry there. There were people around, it was a kind of party inside and I somehow knew that people should be drunk to entry inside that tree. Then, I went up the stairs and finally passed the door. Inside, there were lots of floors; a wood stairs took me to a bar, there were a balcony with lots of people around, they were all drinking, it was very noise, people were having fun, it was like a crowded party. I just wanted to run way of that noise; I kept going up the stairs through the floors, the walls were dirty, it was dark. Suddenly, I got into a place similar to an abandoned factory. The place was large and mysterious and there were lots of geometrical machines doing simple mechanical movements. Afterwards, all the simple machine’s movements togheter become a very complex choreography togheter with all the sounds that come out of the machines that was filling the entire environment. It was like a concert, in the ambient I also heard water drops coming out of the ceiling and the machines; the place was very humid, moldy and it smelt oleo. I was very impressed with this strange place.

The NAVY

I was in a very high place inside a transparent box that was suspended in the sky. The sensation and the view were marvellous, the wind was coming over my body, my hairs were flying, and it was very high. There was a big red petroleum ship crossing an amazing and beautiful bridge under my feet. I was not afraid to fall, but my friend was terrified.

dream in the hospital

I needed to give something to the hospital..
something like an exam.
This thing should come out of my body.
It was difficult.
My father was with me..
We were in a hurry, going to travel, but i could not get this thing out of me.
Then I found a similar material on the ground.
The material was white.. similar to plastic or silicone..
It was round and next to it there was a white ball with a smooth surface..
I thought I would take them and give as if they came from me because mine should be very similar.
I was about to give them to the hospital when suddenly the real thing came out of my pants, my thing!
It was a bit different from the others.
Mine was light yellow, bigger, not round and it was wrinkled.
So I gave mine to them.
I went to travel with all my family.

Inside the hospital.. between the corridors..
In a door..
There was a biological leg being built in a strange lab..
I had some connection with that anyway..
I was trying to understand that leg.. it was mine..
I had to improve it but I was confused.
It must be done.

We were in a bar, cars was passing by, we were sitting on the table and driking beers, I was with my cousin Joao, his hand was much bigger than mine, he had really big hands on that day. Suddenly I saw my cousin walking on top of the eletrecity wires, betwen the posts. It was a calm day.

dream at Africa

I was in a plane going to Africa and I jumped from the airplane to the cost borders of Africa and the cost was in a format of map, it was like jumping under the map borders, as the map of Africa was the earth shape itself.
I was swimming with my dog Daria, we were trying to go up in the Africa land, and it was a relief with different shapes.
Later I took a boat with Daria and other people; in the landscape there was black rocks mountains that was transforming into enormous waves that was coming in our direction. When this giant waves was geetting really close, it transformed again in black high rock mountains.
